ERIC
“Eric” is a 25-year-old R&B and neo-soul singer-songwriter-producer based in Guangzhou, China. He has been singing his whole life, and has been performing and producing music professionally for seven years as an independent artist. He has a tendency to sing with weightiness in his first passage, but through his recent voice lessons, he has learned how to access a light, head-dominant mix above F4, up to C5. He needs to learn how to sing in a smoother mix with more options for power in his first passage to have a marketable R&B/neo-soul sound, but the vowel modifications provided to him in exercises are not working well because his first language is Mandarin.
For example, when working on the following section from “End of the Road” (Boyz II Men), he defaults to too much volume/pressure, or a very high larynx with lots of constriction, or flipping into falsetto:
START: 01:16
Although we've come
To the end of the road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural
You belong to me
I belong to you
